Got Flax?

FlaxMilk, the latest entry into the growing market for non-dairy “milk” products, provides a convenient flaxmilkand delicious way for patients (and their doctors, of course!) to get the healthful benefits of milled flax seed into their diets.

Sugar-free, lactose- and gluten-free, totally vegan and low calorie, an 8 oz. glass of FlaxMilk provides 1,110 grams of omega-3 fatty acids (from the alpha-linolenic acid that represents about 50% of the oils in flax seed). It contains no cholesterol or trans-fats, and carries just 50 calories per serving.

Like “milks” derived from soy, almonds, cashews and hemp seeds, FlaxMilk can be used in smoothies, over breakfast cereals, and as a substitute for milk or cream in recipes. It has a clean, slightly nutty but not overpowering flavor, and a rich milk-like texture.

The product is made by Flax USA, an independent company owned by the Stober family, who are fifth-generation North Dakota flax farmers. On their 1,600 acre family farm, the Stobers grow a non-GMO variety of flax called “Golden Omega,” which has a lighter color and lighter flavor than the typical dark-brown varieties, but packs a high-omega punch.

“We are excited to be the first to produce 100% natural FlaxMilk so that all consumers—adults and children alike—could enjoy a lactose-free, dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free milk product,” says owner, Stephanie Stober.

FlaxMilk retails for $2.98 per half gallon, and is available plain or vanilla-flavored (the vanilla product is sweetened with cane juice). Both are fortified with Vitamin A, D, and B12. The product is available in Wal-Mart stores nationwide.
