Expiration dates, “use by” guidelines, or “manufactured on” notices are printed on the labels of nearly all consumable products nowadays. When it comes to dietary supplements, who determines those dates––and what do they really mean?

Among those who do recognize DSHEA as the main federal statute regulating dietary supplements, there’s considerable ambivalence about the efficacy and the intent of the law.

A company that makes a strong and sustained commitment to the health and wellbeing of its own employees is likely to be equally committed to ensuring the quality and safety of its products.
In the 18 months since it launched, the Council for Responsible Nutrition’s “Online Wellness Library” (OWL) has amassed labels and product information from 89 dietary supplement companies representing over 11,000 product labels. The library, an independent and voluntary project, is part of a broader supplement industry movement toward greater transparency and truthfulness.
All herbs, like all agricultural products, are potentially subject to contamination with microbes, pesticides, environmental toxins, and financially-motivated adulteration or mislabeling.Certain herbs, however, have been particularly vulnerable to economically-motivated adulteration.
